OT LOVE

This weekend was Regionals for Theta Tau, and I had an absolute blast. My old roommate, Ashley, was in town, so Friday we had a girl's night with Magda and Diana. It was absolutely hilarious. We learned how to Swagga while you Surf, I gave the Bartender a lesson in Business 101, and stayed out until the bar closed for the first time in a looonnnnggg time.

Sunday I took Goose out to Field Day, and he was a hit with the soccer ball. I went to a Pampered Chef party and got a few goodies for the kitchen. Finally, that night we went to the dinner for Theta Tau. It was at the Havana Social Club, and turned out really nice. After that we went to the after party where Billy and Griff joined us. I think Parsnow may have taken the cake with the most stories after that night. Someone got me for my green glasses Maggie gave me, and I didn't let that one go down without a fuss. Overall it was truly a blast.

Thursday we leave for Cocoa Beach and Orlando!!!! YAYAY!! I love mini-vacays!!!!

No blog post would be complete with my two babies...

Inaccurate Information Surrounds Nuclear

Two of my friends and co-workers, Eric Danner and Carrington Dillon, recently co-authored an independent letter to the editor of Virginia Tech's newspaper, the Collegiate Times. The Collegiate Times used a graphic of a nuclear bomb in an article about an up-and-coming nuclear engineering program. You can read the response below.

A community organizer came along and responded to their letter to the editor with an off-base and personal attack on Eric, Carrington, and AREVA. We would all appreciate it if you could show your support and share your opinion in the comment section below her article.

Check out the following quick links to get caught up on the situation.

Instant Immersion

Let's see, I committed to updating my blog every Friday, and it looks like I am 1 for 3 on that. In other words, I am failing. However, life if really good right now. Wednesday night I was driving home from the gym, and for the first time in a really long time, I realized I was really, truly proud of myself. Since returning to Charlotte I feel like I can say I am really excelling and reaching my potential at this point in life, but it is so bittersweet. I am so tremendously happy, but I still wish like hell that my Dad could be here to live it with me - to experience what I feel is the result of two incredible parenting jobs.

I am completed the draft of my first large task within my new position at work - a 108 page calculation. It is due on October 26th, so I am proud to be completing it early and under budget. French is going pretty good - we need to practice more, but at least we are getting a little exposure each week. I am loving my business courses at Queens, as well as my membership to Lifestyles Fitness. The Body Attack class I take with Tiffany, Kari, Nahir, Barbara, and Earls, and it is serious shit. Theta Tau is going pretty well. I feel like I am taking care of business. We have Regionals this weekend in Charlotte, and while I am not thrilled about their use of my $40.00, I guess it is the support that counts.

Billy is doing fantastic! He just took on another job painting, so I am hoping he is going to quit the night job. He works about three nights a week right now, and I am hoping to cut that down to ZERO. Although, we actually get home around the same time. My typical schedule is work, class, work out, cook dinner, walk Goose, sit on patio with B and Goose and enjoy the night, each other's company, and a beer.

Since my last post, we hit up Oak Island for Labor Day, threw a huge bday bash for Tiffany, wiled out for my birthday with my Mom and Butch, walked in the Heart Walk, started my golf class, awarded Anthony Chang the 4th Bi-Annual Godfather Award...

Billy and I are headed to Orlando in a little over a week. He really deserves a break, so I hope it is a great vacation. We are going to go down to Cocoa/Melbourne Beach on Friday, Oct. 9, stay there two nights, then drive over to Orlando for three nights. I think we are going to go to Epcot and Universal. I really don't care about going anywhere but Epcot; however B really wants to go to Universal.

I am also in the process of planning a trip for NA-YGN (North American Young Generation in Nuclear) that will take a group of 12 of us out to the west coast for four days. We will fly into Portland October 26, then travel to Richland for tours of our other fuel facility, Columbia Generating Station, Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, Wild Horse Wind Farm, Volpentest Hammer Training Facility, and potentially Hanford B reactor. On the way back to Portland from the Wind Farm, we will be within 50 miles of Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Ranier, so the view will be incredible.

I put all my pictures on my other computer, and I don't feel like starting that big boy up, so I only have a couple saved that people have sent me via email.

Fame

My titles generally have absolutely nothing to do with my posts; it tends to be the last phrase or word I see before I begin writing. I hope to blog every Friday from now on. An old friend that I have always held in the highest regard encouraged me to continue blogging for myself, so those are my intentions at this point.

In the last month, B and I hit up Nashville, TN and moved to Char-town. We visited my cousin Leigh, who I absolutely adore, had the opportunity to shop, eat great food, spend time with those I hold so dearly to my heart, and see some new things. We visited the Jack Daniels Distillery and Arrington Vineyards, needless to say, our wine rack is full with our own wine :) and the bar is stocked with JD.

Not the greatest picture, but it works...

I had a fantastic last week at work in Lynchburg August 10-14. I was super busy, but I was able to look back on all that I had learned and contributed in a year. Granted I definitely felt I didn't live up to my expectations or potential, but I am so grateful and proud of the opportunity. I also received an awesome token of love... it is heat treated, stainless steel (so it's a beast for its size), with two guide tubes. It has the AREVA emblem on the top and reads "In Appreciation of your commitment and dedication HANNAH ARRINGTON Areva's US Fuel Sector 2008-2009. Super cool. Ohh and I got a gift certificate to Home Depot that I quickly used on hanging baskets and new pots for my patio.

Billy and I are not huge fans of living in Lynchburg, but the surrounding areas are so beautiful and we had time to really grow together without all of the city distractions.

Anyway, so in Charlotte we have been having the time of our lives. We are extremely busy, but using it to strengthen us a individuals and as a couple. Billy is in school full time for Sustainable Technologies with a concentration in Green Builds, and I am working towards my MBA. We are also both enrolled in French Class on Monday nights from 7:00-9:00. Billy has been working with a mutual friend on his business Premier Ozone. He has a knack for it, and really enjoys the work. He was recently promoted to Marketing Coordinator / Technician.

I am now in a Mechanical Systems group designing the EPR (primarily working on the Component Cooling Water System). I also accepted the position of Alumni Director for Theta Tau, which gives me another set of responsibilities. Although recently I have only been working on drafting the Bylaws and trying (unsuccessfully) not to piss certain individuals off. More on that later...

Anyway, my schedule currently looks like this:

Monday:
7:15-4:45 Work
5:00-6:15 Class
7:00-9:00 Class

Tuesday:
7:30ish-5:30ish Work
6:00-7:30 Gym
8:00-until Catch up on Theta Tau stuff

Wednesday:
7:15-4:45 Work
5:00-6:15 Class
6:30-7:30 Gym

Thursday:
7:15-4:45 Work
5:00-5:45 Run Myers Park if I get out of work on time
6:00-8:45 Class
9:00-9:45 Run if I can't get out of work at 4:45

Friday:
8:00-4:30 Work (every other Friday off)
6:00-7:00 Gym
8:00-until Friend time

Saturday:
Usually we are traveling somewhere

Sunday:
4:00-6:00 Golf Class / Lessons
6:00 (or whenever) Soccer League

So my point is that my schedule is pretty tight, and that does not even outline all of the time I must spend studying.

As for the Alumni Director position, it has been relatively smooth sailing outside of the work required to become an official group (Bylaws and other docs)... until recently. Issues were brought up from almost a year ago, that I thought were certainly put to rest by now. One individual has been responsible for bringing up the old stuff and adding new spin on other old stuff. It appears very evident to me that obviously something is bothering that individual heavily regarding the organization; however it was difficult to reach what the problem actually was or is. Last night we had a meeting where a problem would be brought up, then contradicted, then a spin on the problem would be brought up, and then explained as "not a problem". In retrospect, I reacted poorly. I said, "Wait who really has the problem here?" (rhetorically), and I also decided I was done trying to understand the issue after multiple contradictions and vague responses because we were getting absolutely nowhere. I basically said I was done, moving on, ignoring the ridiculous "issue" (if it even is an issue). We eventually moved on, came to some agreements, and all seemed fine. Until I received a hateful email this morning outlining where I went wrong, i.e. questioning who really has the problems (which was very relevant and obvious) and bringing up old incidences (which was why the meeting called in the first place... old issue surrounding a vote).

Ultimately I have chosen to vent on my blog, and move forward, not letting anything get in the way of doing a great job as Alumni Director, but I can't help that it hurts. I guess what hurts most is that I thought all was fine after the meeting... to my face I am doing a good job and all was swell... in an email I am a vindictive bitch that needs to recognize her wrongs. I can admit I responded poorly, but my words were still true. I just don't know how to work with people that you never know what you will do to set them off... that no matter how careful you are, there is always something that was wrong.

I said it with emotion, which I should have left out. Working with engineers (ohh wait, I am one), it can become very obvious why women do not always hold the highest positions. We do take things personally, we are emotional, we are compassionate. It just doesn't always mesh so well with business.

I do feel better being able to write about it, because I can't discuss it with the people who are involved without being unfair to the individual, and I certainly don't want to continue upsetting this person because I cannot take a mix of smiles, happy chit chat, and damning emails. My best advice for any and everyone is NEVER use email to express anger unless your distance requires you to do so. Not only will your point come a across more effectively in person, but you will be much more respected for doing so. Luckily I learned this in college, not everyone was so fortunate.

Off to Oak Island this weekend.... YAYAYYA!

Last weekend we had an absolute blast with my mom and Butch in Raleigh. My mom was recovering from a surgery and B and I went to see Tori Amos on Friday! She was awesome as always!

Saturday we went to the Jays and hung out with all the animals... Goose has a blast, until he got shocked by the fence and he cried and cried...

We made gumbo with the veggies we got from their garden and shrimp we picked up from a guy selling it on the side of the road. FABULOUS!

Friday we are off to Nashville for a weekend with my Dad's side of the family. I can't wait!

Going away parties are already in place, so you know what that means... ONE MORE WEEK!!!!

This is what I woke up to the other morning...

Wise sayings often fall on barren ground....

Billy: What time do you wake up in the morning?

Hannah: 5:30

Billy: Damn, I don't know how you do it. I RESPECT DA HUSTLE
THO!

Doors opening every which way...

Book your tickets to France at the end of 2010 thru 2011, because B and I will be calling Paris home. Is this real? Is this really happening?

Hannah,
I have acceptance from NR for you to join the Engineering Services business (project management and business development) starting September 2010. This will be part of the IPX program, which is a natural progression from Voyager for those who want to gain experience outside of the purely technical organization. If you accept this assignment, you will be transferred to Alan Thomas's product line in September 2010 and begin your Ex-Pat assignment when you are ready, probably after the Christmas break. Both the French and German colleagues have agreed to your assignment, so you can choose between Erlangen and Paris. If I recall, you expressed an interest in Paris but please confirm your choice.
Regards,
GMM

It's is hard not to feel undeserving when I have worked with young professionals like LeAnne Bock and Taylor Smith (who is in a league of his own in my book). I guess this just goes to prove the importance of opportunity, timing, and initiative. Talent is a determining factor, but nothing can take the place of persistence and opportunity. I believe my appreciation and gratitude will motivate me to continue to work harder and more efficiently. I owe AREVA and the voyager program a lot.

Camping last weekend was a blast! Griff joined us, as did Butch's friend John Fields (aka MANGO). Goose and Keanu (Griff's golden retriever) kept us up until all hours of the night and were ready to play at 500am every morning.

Where oh where has my blogger gone? Where oh where has she been?

New camera? check
Lots of weekend trips? check
Goose growing and making life exciting? check
Billy and I loving each other more deeply everyday? check
Time to blog? X

With the road trips and grad school, my blogging life has been non-existent. However I have the resolve to do better. This is such an exciting time in our lives and I truly want to accurately document it.

In the last couple weekends, we have been to Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Oak Island, and Charlotte. We lead a field day and serves beer from a beer truck. We found a place in Charlotte and changed our minds three times (to the dismay of the realtor). We planned a trip out west to Vegas, Grand Canyon, Brice, Mt Zion, Lake Powell for next year and a trip to Orlando and Miami for the end of this year.

In the meantime, more pictures of my love...
